Since 1982, St. Colman’s Home has served Autistic and Developmentally Disabled children. Students are referred for either day school or for our combined residential/school program. The youngsters have been diagnosed as having an Autism Spectrum Disorder. This program serves students whose ages range from 5 to 21 and is licensed and certified by the New York State Education Department.
The Program is humanistic, warm and nurturing, based upon a psycho-educational model, which according to current psychiatric and educational theory, is the treatment of choice for severely disabled students. The focus of the program is to increase academic and functional skills for employability and independent living. This is accomplished by employing a wide array of state-of-the-art educational and treatment methods.

The day program is individually tailored to working with the parents on a daily basis in the transfer of behavior management, functional and educational skills to the home environment. Our residential setting provides an individualized program which promotes skill development in four domains: recreational, vocational, community and domestic skills.
Our vocational/career education is a strong area of emphasis in our program. Students begin training at an early age; the training intensifies as the child grows older and culminates in community businesses for on-site experience and possible employment. Our vocational and career education program is specifically tailored for to the type of disability each student has, and exposes all students to a vast range of opportunities in the community. Community businesses facilitate both job-shadowing and on-site job coaching. St. Colman’s Home employs its own job coach to work with the students during their job experiences.
